"The bar on the ground floor is spacious and relaxing with lots fo blonde wood and marble, while the panelled walls on one side of the bar perfectly compliment the warm suede of the chairs and the welcoming sofa. "

about the building

It's in the same building as the Curzon Cinema, home to all the best art house fare, with a main screen auditorium so retro-ornate, it fees like you're abroad.

Over a decade, these premises have been home to Indian Cuisine, Chinese, and Continental. The last occupant was Les Saveurs de Jean-Christophe Novelli where, for a while also Joel Antunes cooked.

A site that lain empty for a couple of years has once again reopened following a swish makeover by London designers Quad. Against such an elegant backdrop, the food is startling in its simplicity and is expertly cooked.

DESIGN. Step Back in Time, by Robert S. Silver

We asked Nuggy Lianos of
Quad Architects
how the stylish update of '60s modernist chic
in the interior was achieved.

"The brief was to provide a relaxed contemporary atmosphere but also to pick up on certain features of the existing building. The building itself is iconic '60s, Grade II listed. Obviously that was something we had to respect.

"That respect is evident in the building's individual features and decor. A sloping ceiling turns out to be the "socket of the auditorium above" from when the building was a cinema. Behind the long straight bar to the left of the entrance there's a wooden backdrop "almost akin to a take on the London underground map but in timber," says Lianos.

Then there is the specialist Venetian plaster work, frosted glass panels, light fittings with jagged glass fins in pale mushroom and sun bleached rust colours. "Everything is a new take on classic '60s design,"he says. So does Lianos feel that the design was successful? "Yes, it has a nice atmosphere and was quite cool without being cold. I thought it hung together pretty well."
