"The
brief was to provide a relaxed
contemporary atmosphere but also
to pick up on certain features
of the existing building. The
building itself is iconic '60s,
Grade II listed. Obviously that
was something we had to respect.
"That
respect is evident in the building's
individual features and decor.
A sloping ceiling turns out to
be the "socket of the auditorium
above" from when the building
was a cinema. Behind
the long straight bar to the left
of the entrance there's a wooden
backdrop "almost akin to
a take on the London underground
map but in timber," says
Lianos.
Then
there is the specialist Venetian
plaster work, frosted glass panels,
light fittings with jagged glass
fins in pale mushroom and sun
bleached rust colours. "Everything
is a new take on classic '60s
design,"he says. So does
Lianos feel that the design was
successful? "Yes, it has
a nice atmosphere and was quite
cool without being cold. I thought
it hung together pretty well."
